la vida es una tombola

I'm in my 20s and live in Austin, TX. Ask me anything.

Yesterday I went to Sprouts on a whim with my mom (Lulu), we were next door at Michael’s, and decided that since we were so close, we’d go in to pick up beets and stuff for sandwiches. I was paying for the groceries when Lulu tossed one of those packets of superfood cure-all green powder and said I just had to buy it, it will help my mood, energy etc etc etc. I was asking lulu a ton of questions (what is this? how much does it cost? does it taste good?) when the cashier, who was probably somewhere in her 40s, spoke up and told lulu that she (lulu) was adorable. Then she went on to talk about how we had such a funny mother/daughter dynamic going on, roles reversed, and ended it all with “And you both look really good for your ages. Great genes!”

I know “you look really good for your age” is a compliment, but it has sent me into a tailspin. How old did she think I was? Does she think I’m in my early 30s and look late 20s? Or did she guess my age correctly and think I look younger? Is there a situation where “you look really good for your age” isn’t a compliment? Am I overthinking this? Always.
